Hello all

In this news letter:

Latest Updates:

There has been a few very important updates the last month or two and here are some of them that are urgent.

FireFox: is now on version 8.0.1 and has made a some updates on security risks and program faults.

Win XP: The beloved operating system is now on its last legs and Microsoft will only bring out Urgent / Critical updates for it, and there has been a lot of these so make sure XP is up to date.

Windows Vista : Service Pack 2 has been released and you must upgrade as sooon as you can. More on Service Packs under the Technical Term section

Windows 8: It looks like Windows 8 will be released this year and the people who “know” have it to be in May, keep an eye out as we will be looking at the new Windows later this year.

Slow PC??:

If you find that your PC is becoming slower and slower then you have to ask your self if it might be a Virus or some other nasty stuff that infected your PC. Studies showed that about 48% of PCs are infected with some kind of nasty stuff... Think of it this way, if you have 3 friends then 2 of them (or you and 1 other friend) have some kind of virus or malware on your PCs!

You might think that the Virus Protection you have will keep you from getting infected however the human body's immune system does not prevent you from getting the flu, it only tries to fight the flu after you got it.

The problem with PC Viruses are that they can hide themselves once thy are in the PC to the extent that the Virus Protection system will not find it. You need an external scanner to scan the PC, to obtain one of these you need to contact your support person.

The Microsoft Scam:

The Microsoft Scam goes something like this:

Someone phones you up and say: “ Hi we are from Microsoft and noted that you have a virus on your PC, would you like us to help you remove it?”

They will then take you through a few steps, open this, close that, go to this page, etc...

The problem with this is that it is a SCAM!!!

They will infect your PC once they get you to do these things AND probably get your bank details or credit / debit card details and then you are in deep trouble.

If you got a call like this you NEED to contact your:

  • Bank and notify them to keep a close eye on your accounts as the accounts might have been compromised

  • Support person ASAP to arrange for them to have a look at your PC

If you get a call like this in the future tell them in a very clear voice: “Thank you, I will contact my support person to get this resolved. Have a good day.” and hang up the phone. Call your support person immediately and ask their advice on this matter.

Technical Terms – Service Packs:

Windows bring out regular fixes for faults they have in your computer and you can get these fixes automatically or request them manually. Most of the time Windows would bring out a fix for a fix for a fix... It is like using correctional fluid to “hide” or fix a spelling mistake only to misspell the word again, then use the fluid again, and again... later it just looks horrible.

So what windows then do is to rewrite the whole page and release it as a service pack, therefore a service pack is a way to cleanly and correctly fix the mess. It is therefore important to apply service packs when they come out.

Windows bring out Service Packs for all of their software from Win XP, Win Vista, Win 7, Office, etc.
