Telephony - VoIP

1. What is VoIP

VoIP stand for Voice over Internet Protocol and is the method of transferring voice over an Internet connection (in most circumstances ADSL broadband or faster)

2. Quality of Calls

The quality of calls is equal to or better than normal telephone or even mobile call quality but depend on factors like, speed of the broadband, amount of data travelling on the broadband line alongside the the VoIP, amount of simultaneous calls made on the line and hardware used.

2.1. Broadband Speed

VoIP is only data travelling over the broadband and therefore the bandwidth or speed of the line determine how much voice data can travel over the line, the higher the speed the more voice data can be sent over the line.

2.2. Data on the Same Line

Internet browsing or other data that share the same broadband line may impact the quality of calls. As in 2.1 above the amount of data that can travel over the line is determined by the speed of the line and it is recommended that a company should have 1 broadband line for internet browsing and normal data transfer and 1 broadband line for VoIP. This 2 line set-up can then also introduce very important resilience to both the VoIP and data if each line is rented from different broadband companies by adding a fail-over router that will handle both lines and will switch all traffic over to the remaining live line if one should fail.

2.3. Simultaneous Calls

Just as in 2.1 above each call is only data travelling over the line and therefore the speed of the line is limiting factor to the amount of simultaneous calls that can be made before call quality is noticeable.

2.4. Hardware in Use

This is both on the provider and user side. Some companies may use low-end hardware or lines and therefore cause loss of quality and in the same way if the user uses low-end hardware like handsets or lines. It is important to note that it is not a requirement to go with top-end, high priced hardware or lines to receive good quality calls but equally low-end lines and hardware will definitely have an impact on quality.
